Starting Up — The Most or Least Important Step

Starting anything needs a lot of discipline, being disciplined is hard. We, humans, are programmed against anything hard unless we truly enjoy it. The first day of waking up early to hit the gym, the first day at a new place of work, the first few weeks of caring for a newborn baby, etc. they all need some form of discipline in one way or another.

It’s usual to pick up the chatter “At least start it up the rest will fall in place”. It is incredibly difficult to point out how this chatter originated, but it is not as simple as that. For example, for people who don’t work out regularly, the first 7 to 10 days of hitting the gym involve a lot of aches and spasms. If they give up, the pain even then lasts for a week more. However, if they persevere and brave through the pain for a week, their bodies and minds can overcome the first obstacle of living through the pain.

Come to think about it, it is indeed strange how Starting up a company, that is a whole new legal entity, would be expected to be any simpler. In an era where the Startup culture is promoted, and the government is taking a lot of measures to simplify the process of starting a company, the skills needed to continue running a company usually fall prey to the chatter “At least start it up the rest will fall in place”.

Starting up today needs to be looked into a different perspective, similar to a child. Analogous to the phase of family planning wherein a couple decides they want to go in for a baby, Starting up should originate from a set of key questions, that should give back an answer that “Yes, the Business is going to keep making money after paying its employees, its taxes and any stakeholders”. This is the point where the founders must have a “Plan on Paper” and a determination among themselves to take this baby ahead, Pun intended! None of this guarantees that you are going to be a good parent or be a business tycoon but it will surely drive you through the storms that make you doubt the day you took this decision.

Starting up isn’t a trend, being a Co-founder isn’t a title to brag about, it’s a way of life, like parenthood a lifelong commitment.

Before Signing off I’d like to say

The chatter “At least start it up the rest will fall in place” would only hold true if you decide to Startup the way of life of an Entrepreneur to take calculated risks, bold decisions, pave new ways, and never stop learning.

P.S. — If you feel you made a mistake in either of your journies, take a deep breath, stop what you are doing and first make a commitment to this way of life and start fixing up your problems head-on. The good part of parenthood and entrepreneurship is that there is no probation involved, but it’s an on-the-job training it needs your commitment to do right by your baby even if it needs you to take a step back at times.
